DOMINO - VIVE SANO !
December 2009 - March 2010
Mission Statement
To educate communities in healthy lifestyle behaviors in
order to
PREVENT CANCER AND REDUCE OBESITY
Background -
Cancer is the
second cause of death in developed countries (after heart
disease) and is responsible for one out of every 8 deaths
in the world. In Paraguay, Cancer is becoming the
3rd
cause of
mortality, with uterine cancer as the leading cause for
women, and lung cancer for men.
At least one-third of all cancer cases are
preventable.
The key to prevention is education.
Obesity is on
the rise, even in low- and middle-income countries,
particularly in urban settings, to the
point of pandemic. WHO projects that by 2015, approximately
2.3 billion adults will be overweight and more than 700
million will be obese. Globally, at least 20 million
children under the age of 5 years were overweight in 2005.
In Paraguay, 53% of women and 42% of men are either
overweight or obese.
Overweight
and obesity are major risk factors for a number of chronic
diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and
cancer.
Obesity is entirely preventable.
Again, the key to prevention is education.
Mode of Intervention - The
DOMINO catamaran, currently being built in Asuncion,
Paraguay, is an ambassador of good health throughout the
world. The DOMINO HEALTH FOUNDATION uses the DOMINO
Catamaran to mount health education campaigns for
communities who live along the water, worldwide.
The DOMINO is a boat with a Star appeal, capable of
crossing any ocean, and with large advertising space to
accommodate sponsors who want to promote healthy lifestyle
messages. With a family doctor and a nutritionist aboard,
the DOMINO is a very effective and attractive public
platform for the diffusion of healthy messages.
DHF, DOMINO, and health-minded companies, working together
to
Restore Health to Ocean Communities
Project - The
DOMINO: VIVE SANO! Campaign
will travel from Asuncion (Paraguay), to Buenos Aires
(Argentina), Montevideo (Uruguay), Florianopolis (Brasil),
Rio de Janeiro, and Recife (and many ports in between)
starting December 2009 until March 2010.
In
selected cities, the DOMINO and its team will conduct
highly publicized community health education events.
Aim - To
educate local communities in healthy lifestyles behaviors
in order to
PREVENT CANCER AND REDUCE OBESITY
